Currently, the Federal excise tax is 18.4 cents per gallon. We propose to raise the tax to 68.4 cents per gallon in which half of the revenue would be spent on improving roads, bridges, and other highway infrastructure. The other half of the revenue would be to offset the national debt due to unfunded wars in the Middle East since 2001.
Higher gasoline taxes would give people incentives to drive less, to buy more efficient vehicles, and to use alternative modes of transportation, thereby reducing the consumption of fossil fuels. The tax should be phased in over a two year period to lessen economic impact.
