The current federal excise tax on gasoline in the US is 18.4 cents. This number has held steady since 1997 without being adjusted for inflation. Meanwhile, our infrastructure has only become older and more structurally deficient. The Highway Trust Fund which provides the capital to revamp our old infrastructure is becoming financially weak and will not be able to provide funding within a few years. A small 5 cent increase in the gasoline tax will allow for an increase in revenue totaling in the billions. This is a small price to pay in order to make highways, metro systems and other rail services; safer and more efficient. An increase in infrastructure spending will provide more jobs and restore areas of the country where toads and bridges have been neglected for over 60 years.
