The federal minimum wage has not been reset since 2009 at the hourly rate of $7.25. Even at this rate, most individuals and families cannot afford the basic needs of survival: housing, food, transportation, medical care, child care, and the ability to save for retirement or unforeseen events. This has a negative effect on not just the economy but on families, communities and regions. If we as a nation are only as strong as our weakest links, then this act of increasing the minimum wage will help us become stronger and economically sustainable.
The increase of minimum wage must reflect the current cost of living, housing, transportation, food supply and medical care.
