Research conducted by the college entrance examination board from Princeton, N.J. illustrates the dramatic increase of SAT scores, up to 57 points, by students with participation in the arts in comparison to those who are not involved. Countries ranking highest in math and science enforce an arts education. Not only do these programs increase academic achievement, they promote “creativity, social development, personality adjustment, and self-worth”.
Although No Child Left Behind explicitly has The Arts as a core academic subject, federal funding for humanities and arts is that of $250,000 compared to that of National Science Foundation which is funded around the $5 billion mark. Art and music is equally as important as math and science and funds should be provided to enrich our students.
