Increase funding of Astronomy education (increased focus in curriculum, required/elective courses) in public High Shools

Astronomy courses and curriculum in public High Schools is critically overlooked. Funding for American Science education exploded in the 50's/60's in an attempt to develop scientists to meet the demand for scientists and engineers while attempting to compete with the Soviet Union during the "space race." This was a time where students would learn about astronomy and would dream of one day developing something that my be sent into the Heavens. Today, it is almost impossible to find any programs in public schools that discuss/talk about astronomy. Other than a week-to-two week unit in a basic science class it is rarely discussed in school. Astronomy should receive more funding for elective/required classes in public schools. In doing so perhaps a new group of scientists will be inspired.
