As a result of the war on drugs, petty drug offenders, as well as people who can't afford treatment have been sent to federal and state prisons. This leads to overcrowding. The conditions in prisons, as well as the unreasonably long duration of the sentences leads these people to further their addiction and commit multiple offenses. Then, due to the three strike law, they get sent to prison for good, ruining their lives and costing the state and America thousands of dollars.
We believe this is a vicious cycle.
Together with legislation that eliminates three strike laws and reduces severity of sentencing for minor drug offenders and targets dealers and cartels, funding to halfway houses and rehab centers will reduce prison population and offer a real solution to people with drug problem
