When Congress failed to act prior to the March 1st deadline, they allowed National Institutes of Health (NIH) funds to be devastatingly slashed as part of across-the-board funding cuts to federal programs, known as the sequester. These arbitrary spending cuts did not take into account the impact on specific programs, but we know the NIH cuts will be felt deeply by the heart and stroke community. Jobs will be lost in research labs, entire promising research projects and clinical trials will be canceled, and patients will wait longer for treatments and cures.
