Space exploration is very important and extremely underfunded. NASA's budget (as percentage of the federal budget) has dropped to pre-1960 levels, at the very start of the space race. With its current budget, NASA has been able to send a rover to Mars and has supported the International Space Station for 18 years; imagine what they could do with more. We could have a base on Mars in less than 20 years; and possibly have a habitable Mars in 50.
