Increase the Length of Ordinary Paternity Leave.

Created by S.S. on March 29, 2014

The average male parent only gets 1 to 2 weeks of ordinary paternity leave. I wish for the ordinary paternity leave to be greatly increased to at least 20 weeks or more.

The issue I see is that the mother has given birth and may suffer postpartum issues e.g. postpartum depression, but in many cases, has to be the sole carer of the child for most of the day.

With more paternity leave, the mother would get more time to recover. Mothers would no longer have to be run ragged every day while only being able to sleep when the baby does (and often being unable to, leading to major sleep deprivation as there is no time to recover when they miss sleep), they could get a normal quantity of sleep and both parents could work as partners raising the child. As they naturally should.
