The U.S. is the only country in the developed world without paid maternity leave. Only the U.S., Swaziland, Lesotho and Papua New Guinea allow their citizens to go unpaid during this critical and expensive time for a new family. American families are already struggling to make ends meet and may receive no pay for the time they stay home with their newborn. And moms who most need their jobs are forced to go back to work too soon because they can't live without their paycheck. Many thought that in 1993 when FMLA passed, it would only be a few years before paid leave would be mandated... it has been two decades. We urge you to act on behalf of new mothers and their families and bring our country up to par with the rest of the developed world.
