This petition is aimed at successfully increasing the federal minimum wage for tipped employees. The current wage is $2.13 an hour and has not increased since 1991.There are still 14 or 28 percent of states that are currently paying their tipped employees this amount. Federal wages for tipped employees has remained the same for over twenty years and has not kept up with inflation or the rising cost of living. In 2010 the average amount tipped employees made was just over $18,000 which is below the poverty line. In 2012 restaurants made $630 billion and accounts for one tenth of the work force. The amount that restaurants are making shows that the restaurant industry can and must pay their employees a fair wage. Tipped employees deserve to make a livable wage that can support basic needs.
