"A November 1971 study of NASA by the Midwest Research Institute of Kansas City, MO concluded the $25 billion in 1958 dollars spent on civilian space R&D during the 1958-1959 period has returned $181 billion through 1981 to the U.S. public. This period, 1958-1969 was only space exploration. With each mission - a Mars rover, a space telescope, a probe to study the sun - two big multipliers happen. First, new technology is invented every time for each mission. This tech is patented and licenced out to American companies thousands of times.
