The Earth cannot sustain life indefinitely, so it is in our best interest as a species to develop technologies to allow us to reach and eventually live on other planets. Research into the technology required for such an endeavor would also lead to short-term benefits as well, such as more efficient agriculture, fuel conservation, and general wellness of being for people. We may have a large amount of time before an exodus from Earth is necessary but, barring our extinction before then, such a time will arrive.
