According to the American Transplantation Foundation, over 120,000 American citizens are on the organ waitlist. This translates into an average of 22 people on the waitlist dying each day. We as the American public have the moral will and capacity to change this. Currently, individuals can indicate their preference for organ donation when applying for an identification card/driver license. However, for a variety of reasons, most individuals, including many who do want to donate, submit such documents without indicating their consent. By changing the policy to presumed consent, we would instead have to opt out of organ donations. Organ donation is supported by all major religions and does not interfere with funeral proceedings. We can save thousands of lives ever year.
