The overtime salary threshold of the Fair Labor Standards Act has not been updated to keep with our times (since 1975); and as a result, the protections it once offered to over 60% of the American labor force now only apply to 11%- only those making less than $23,660 for a full-time employee. It is incumbent upon the Obama administration to change this threshold, and does not require the participation of a potentially hostile Congress.
This proposal would:
* Have 6.1 million workers newly covered see an increase from $455 per week to $984 per week.
* Cover low- and mid-income Americans, those least able to negotiate for this type of increase on their own.
* Disproportionally help minorities, women, and younger workers.
