Inhalers today cost $30-50 each, while the actual manufacturing costs are only a few dollars. Why is this?
The inflated prices result from pharmaceutical companies being able to obtain new patents every few years by modifying a currently produced inhaler. Each patent aims to defend their product from smaller companies that manufacture cheap generic versions, in effect, creating a monopoly. This drives up prices by hundreds of percent, at the expense of patients!
Isn't it bad enough that they have a medical condition? Why should patients endure the extra costs for the sake of massive profit margins for pharmaceutical companies?
Prices need to be regulated so that they are affordable. Currently people who can't afford inhalers try to save puffs, causing preventable asthma attacks.
