Increase taxes on assault weapons and accessories to fund the protection of others

Banning assault weapons and accessories will drive the market for these products underground and won't prevent those intent on using these devices in the wrong way from getting them. Increasing taxes on the purchases of weapons and using that funding for prevention and protection, whether in enforcement or mental health funding, is the only realistic and sustainable approach to managing this situation. Like cigarettes and alcohol, those that want the freedom need to pay for it. An increased tax makes the debate an economic argument, rather than a constitutional one, and should allow legislation the room it needs to enact some action. Responsible gun owners don't lose their rights but they assume more of the burden of the few that abuse the privilege.
