I feel that wait staff should be paid at the very least minimum wage. For them to earn sometimes less than 50% of the minimum wage for the work they do is unacceptable on many fronts. By changing this longtime standard, this can help more than the wait staff, but the restaurants, patrons, and the local communities.
Although waiting tables may seem like an unimportant job and that anyone can do it, it's far from the truth. We need people to feel the job they're doing is important. That trickles down to how they feel about their job, how well they do it and how the people receiving the benefits of their job feel about them. Dealing with people all day long deserves compensation that matches that.
This will help have a better quality of service and better quality of life overall.
