Our dependence on energy, especially energy supplied by foreign countries, has significant impacts on our economy, environmental quality, foreign relations, and security. The Department of Energy has funded research in this area but the results have been disjointed, if not misguided. Congress has studied the issue (http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/RL34645.pdf), and introduced the New Manhattan Project for Energy Independence (H.R. 513), which failed in the House 172-256, on June 26, 2009. It's time to revisit this legislation, invest in upgrading our energy distribution grid, and provide for future generations.
