Initiate a push with Congress for the admission of Puerto Rico into the Union as the 51st state.

Created by A.V. on October 27, 2013

The island of Puerto Rico has been a US territory and commonwealth since 1898. Now, after 100 years, the citizens, in an island wide referendum, have voted in favor of becoming the 51st US state. Over the past 110 years, the citizens of Puerto Rico have gained more rights over time and are now ready to take the final step in becoming true citizens. They are ready to elect presidents, vote, and do so much more. They already travel with US passports and fight overseas alongside men and women from across the United States. Puerto Rico is an island deep in culture, yet stricken with corruption and poverty, statehood is a means for native Puerto Ricans to overcome. Please, sign this petition to encourage President Obama to begin talks with Congress about moving towards Puerto Rican statehood!
