Politics is meant to be a service to the people, not a lifelong career. Politics has become more and more professionalized over the years. Because of this, it is near impossible for representatives to understand what their people want/need. In 1995 Edward H. Crane, formerly of the Cato institute, made a compelling argument as to why term limits as essential to achieving a proper representation of the people. I urge to to read his article if you need more information.
