Thorium is a fairly abundant natural element that can be used in a different, safe type of reaction to provide a much greater amount of energy than traditional reactors. Thorium is also much cleaner than uranium with minimal by-products. This technology has been around for many years and was created by Alvin Weinberg, the same man that invented the widely used light water reactor but was discarded during the Nixon administration.
