Every four years American voters are forced to vote for the lesser of two evils because our system doesn't really support the viability of third parties. Voting for a third party candidate splits the vote of one of the major parties and may cause the more popular party to actually lose the election.
But if we would adopt an instant runoff system (also known as ranked choice voting), the voter could rank candidates in order of preference. If no candidate wins a clear majority, then the votes of the lowest ranked candidates are redistributed to the second choice until a clear winner arises. In this system, a vote for a third party candidate could not cause the candidate of another party to lose the election by splitting the vote.
