The best defense in any situation is knowing what to do and how to defend oneself. All governed employees, contractors and military personnel must take Active Shooter Awareness training every year. Why are we not requiring the same training in schools where the majority of these situations occur?
I propose that the administration mandate this training for faculty members and students alike.
For faculty members this would provide solid response training and give teachers a tools they need to stay alive and defend students.
For children this training would empower them with knowledge to overcome terrifying situations where most feel helpless. It may not save everyone but it is the start that we need.
