Our prison system is overcrowded. Sentences are long and recidivism rates are high. We could save billions of dollars each year if instead of just locking up criminals for X amount of time and hoping it does some good, we could use the proven method of X prison sentence and Y strokes of the cane.
For those who don't know, the cane is a stick made of rattan that is used to strike an offender's body, usually on the buttocks. In countries where judicial corporal punishment is applied, overall crime rates are low, recidivism rates are low and, consequentially, incarceration costs are minimal.
The Eighth Amendment is not at issue; the Supreme Court ruled in 1977 that corporal punishment does not violate the "cruel and unusual" clause.
