We propose that the antiquated system of the electoral college be finally abolished by means of a constitutional amendment and that a national popular vote of the citizens of the 50 states and the District of Columbia chose the President and Vice-President.
To ensure the winner has a clear mandate to govern, a majority of votes will be required to be elected. If no one candidate receives greater than 50% of votes on election day, a runoff of the top two vote receivers will be held after a period of a few weeks to a month. This will create opportunities for 3rd party candidates to potentially qualify for this runoff and encourage greater political party diversity overall.
