This petition calls for a nationwide ban of the sale and possession of shark fin soup. Each year, an estimated 100 million sharks are killed brutally because of the ongoing demand for shark fin soup and other shark fin dishes.
The horrific process of shark finning involves fishermen capturing live sharks, finning them, and dumping the finless animal back into the water - still alive.
In the United States, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, California, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands have already banned the sale and possession of shark fins, effectively eliminating the availability of the soup.
I petition to make this a national issue, banning this horrible practice once and for all throughout the United States.
