Welfare reform has been debated for years, with passionate supporters and detractors on both sides of the aisle. This topic is typically limited to social welfare, such as food stamps and housing assistance, even though corporate welfare accounts for as much as two-thirds of total welfare spending. According to a study by the Citizens for Tax Justice, 10% of the nation's 300 wealthiest corporations paid less than 0% in taxes from 2008 to 2010. In other words, these corporations made more money after taxes than they did before them.
Most Americans are unaware that corporate welfare is even taking place.
As he prepares for the State of the Union address, President Obama is in a unique position to alert the American people about this ridiculous practice, and to take steps to stop it.
