Each year, millions of Americans go without access to quality medical care due to lack of insurance or money. 44,800 preventable deaths occur due to lack of health insurance. A study conducted in 2007 found that 61.1% of all bankruptcies occur because of high medical expenses. This is a situation that needs to be rectified immediately.
Currently, the United States lags far behind much of the developed world: we are ranked 50th in life expectancy, 42nd in infant mortality, 1st in cost of medical care, 37th in overall performance, last in healthcare quality and 72nd in the world in terms of overall health (all facts are from the WHO, Commonwealth Fund and the U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs).
We as a nation can do better. We the People demand a universal healthcare system.
