Square Foot Gardening is the practice of planning and creating small but intensively planted gardens. This is especially useful in backyard or community gardens. It also helps keep food production at a local sustainable level. The practice includes a strong focus on compost, densely planted raised beds and biointensive attention to a small, clearly defined area. The method is particularly well-suited for areas with poor soil, beginner gardeners or for those with disabilities. The phrase "square foot gardening" was popularized by Mel Bartholomew in a 1981 Rodale Press book and subsequent PBS television series. It is being taught here in US but also world-wide.
