There have been far too many well-publicized cases of child molestation within the Roman Catholic church and other religious bodies - most recently involving Independent Baptists - that have been allowed to be handled as "church matters" outside the authority of federal, state or local government.
That is self-evidently morally wrong, and it is incumbent upon thinking adults in a free society to act on such horrible injustices.
As it has been said, "It takes a village" to nurture children into adulthood, and we as Americans are that village.
