Amtrak's Northeast Corridor is a vital piece of infrastructure connecting as far south as Richmond, VA to as far north as Boston, MA. Major cities along this route include Washington, DC, Baltimore, MD, Philadelphia, PA, New York City, Providence, RI, and Boston, MA just to name a few. Building the Gateway Tunnels underneath the Hudson River is crucial to providing redundancy and increased capacity along this critical corridor. The current tunnels are nearing the end of their useful lives, prone to failure, and if lost without replacement would cause the loss of billions in dollars in economic activity and lost production, and strain remaining infrastructure until it, too, fails. By providing sufficient loans to Amtrak from it's loan fund, the FRA can prevent an impending disaster.
