STEM education provides students the knowledge and skills to solve tough challenges. One global challenge we face is food. Overall food production must increase by approx. 70% by 2050, while production in developing countries will need to almost double (FAO, 2009). In a recent survey, 3% of college graduates and 9% of Millennials have or would consider a career in agriculture (ag.). Between 2015 and 2020, nearly 60,000 high-skilled ag. job openings are expected annually in the U.S., yet only 35,000 graduates are available to fill them (USDA). Despite the availability of jobs, the majority of graduates and Millennials believe that 1) ag. jobs are hard to get and/or 2) that ag. careers do not pay well. Agriculture impacts everyone, daily. Help integrate agriculture with STEM...build STEAM!
