According to the US brokered peace agreement that ended Africa's longest civil war,the people of Abyei were accorded a special status pending their self- determination referendum simultaneously with the rest of South Sudan.The Abyei protocol was aborted by the Khartoum regime before it was even conceived.
The referendum of the people of Southern Sudan went ahead after long bickering and skirmishes and a very effective global leadership lead by President Obama.Today South Sudan is a free nation, nevertheless, this freedom is threatened by the stagnation and undetermined future of Abyei.
