Everyday new evidence of atrocities by the IS in Iraq come to light. These militants have no allies in the established states in the region. They have no allies in the UN or any of the security council. They have no allies in our European allies. As long as there is no occupation, only airstrikes and carefully chosen temporary land operations, I believe the majority of the American public, would support direct action against the IS, even if there is a chance of some loss of American soldiers. The self centered stand offish policy currently in effect looks like we are only interested in our own interests and do nothing to help the world get rid of the Islamic State. The moral and practical imperative is to fight IS not just create a safe zone for Americans in Irbil.
