It has recently been discovered that Troy Haupt, a man located in North Carolina, has the only known copy of the original Super Bowl I broadcast. Instead of dealing in good faith with the owner of the film, the NFL has refused to pay a reasonable price (at one point, offering a paltry $30,000), and has threatened legal action should they be offered to another party.
Both CBS and NBC held broadcast rights to the game, but did not save the film - this was common practice in the 1960's. The NFL also made no attempts to preserve this historic event, and recently attempted to pass of a cobbled together series of highlights as a full broadcast.
This is a significant piece of American sports history which deserves to be viewed by general public; the NFL needs to be realistic in negotiations
