President Mohamed Morsi Isa El-Ayyat of Egypt has elevated himself to a position akin to the pharaohs of old, granting himself near-absolute power in his country's government and decreeing that his decisions may not be disputed. Though he claims he has done this to "protect the revolution" while the new constitution is ratified, the courts, the Egyptian people and 30 of the 85 members of the assembly drafting the new constitution are all opposed to his claim to power and his vision for Egypt.
Rights experts fear the worst from this new constitution: That the Islamic clergy will be allowed to greatly influence legislation, leading to restrictions on speech, women's rights, and other such liberties.
We the people formally request U.S. intervention in this frightening turn of events.
