Introduce an amendment to the Constitution of the United States that repeals the Second Amendment

Created by J.H. on December 14, 2012

The United States is alone among industrialized countries regarding its gun crime rate, and the number of mass shootings that have taken place with weapons that were purchased legally. It is clear that there must be meaningful reform to Federal gun laws. It is also clear that no such reforms can take place so long as the Second Amendment is part of the Constitution.

The Second Amendment is an artifact of the 18th Century. The US is not under existential threat by foreign militaries, and since private citizens cannot legally own weapons of mass destruction, citizen militias serve no meaningful check on government power. Therefore, the Second Amendment serves no purpose in the 21st Century, beyond enabling gun violence. It should be repealed for the health and safety of all Americans.
