The American democratic system has been weakened and corrupted, in large part due to the unchecked financial influence of large corporations in the political process.
The Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United vs. FEC that corporations and other groups may spend an unlimited amount of money to broadcast commercials during federal elections, a decision which Justice Stevens said "threatens to undermine the integrity of elected institutions across the Nation."
However, the Court did not rule that direct corporate or PAC contributions to political candidates are protected by the First Amendment.
We the People urge the President and Congress to immediately restore confidence in our democracy by banning corporate donations and adhering to the principle: One Person, One Dollar, One Vote.
