The dramatic rise in fracking has multiple effects on the environment and releases dangerous chemicals that directly affect our health. Pittsburgh in 2010 became the first U.S. city to outlaw fracking, with city officials citing threats to drinking water and public health. Since then, more than a dozen East Coast cities have followed suit, and efforts to enact a statewide ban are currently underway in California. Clearly public opinion is starting to sway against fracking in many locations across the United States. In 2012 Vermont became the first state to ban fracking. With support on the east coast and California, there appears to be enough political momentum for a nation-wide ban.
