Across our country abandoned companion animals are put to death every day, using cruel methods such as gas poisoning. This must end. The animals suffer terribly in this process. Before they die they suffer through on average 40 minutes of steadily building visible anxiety, as they are one by one plunged into blackness, where they erupt into violent fighting, defecating & vomiting convulsively as they gasp for air. Euthanizing shelter animals by this method is also harmful & demoralizing to shelter workers, who wish to hold & comfort a frightened animal in its final moments of life. That act may be the only kindness the animal has ever known. Yet this outdated, painful, & expensive practice continues in 30 states. We must pass legislation to end this now.
