The VATICAN CITY STATE is an independent nation not bound by any international environmental treaties to enforce reductions in CARBON DIOXIDE emissions. The Vatican is not a signatory of the KYOTO PROTOCOLS (though many developed countries are), and has allocated very little of their operational budget to fighting CLIMATE CHANGE.
In light of these FACTS, the Vatican continues a centuries old tradition of signaling new popes with "SMOKE." The Vatican releases BLACK SMOKE (soot, CO2, ozone) into the air if no pope is selected, and WHITE SMOKE (which is achieved in modern times through the combustion of harmful chemicals) to signal a new pope.
The same information could easily be relayed by a LOUD ITALIAN MAN yelling from a balcony without lasting damage done to our ONLY PLANET.
