We lack a sufficient Safety Net. The average laid off worker and their family cannot afford COBRA premiums nor do they qualify for Medicaid. Average working people are abandoned with no health insurance during the most stressful time of life.
Corporations consistently run modeling scenarios using sophisticated software on how to restructure "human resources" to cut costs to raise profits with no regard to the serious effects on their employees and their families. Part of a corporation's "profitability" matrix should be to shoulder the cost of COBRA for employees and families that are laid off.
Corporation profits should not be subsidized by taxpayers, nor should employees and their families thrown to the curb be left vulnerable without insurance: health dental vision life & disability.
