Energy demand in the US is constantly increasing. We can build more coal burning power plants, but these release dangerous greenhouse gasses and other pollutants, and there is a limited supply of coal. Wind and solar power are too ineffective and expensive to produce all our energy. Current nuclear reactors are being run longer than planned because there is not enough funding to build new ones.
Breeder reactors have the potential to produce cheap electricity while producing much less nuclear waste and requiring much less fuel than traditional reactors, but they are not being developed in the US because of a misplaced fear of all nuclear power. We need to invest in the technology to build these plants safely.
