A petition for the government to direct money towards the research of Carbon Nanotubes (an extremely strong material), so that this new material can be used in the construction of a Space Elevator. The the money spent should be roughly $10-15 Billion and directed through NASA, JPL and the US University system. This initial stage will focus on basic research and how to farm the nanotubes from millimeter lengths to large scale industrial manufacture. The second stage will be the application of these Nanotubes into an elevator that rises 63,000 miles into space. Once complete this elevator will lower the cost of $20,000/lb of cargo aboard the Shuttle, to $100 aboard the elevator, and will fall proportional to the number of elevators. This investment is key for any/all future Space projects.
