Invest in a nationwide fiber-optic network.

Created by E.K. on June 26, 2014

In order to compete globally we need to improve the availability of information for all areas of the country.

The federal government should invest in a federally funded nationwide fiber-optic network reaching any community with an average population density of over 100 people per square mile.

The lines should be non-exclusively leased to service providers to complete the "last mile" connection and provide service and equipment. It should also be regulate to ensure that installation and service fees charged to the customer are reasonably priced and the service is free from content discrimination. Providers willing to waive installation and keep service costs below a certain threshold could be given reduced line costs and/or tax breaks to provide an incentive for continued expansion.
