It is well known that people living in an airlines hub city without competing airlines pay more for airfare. Why is it I can book a ticket from Dayton to NYC for $600 less than a flight from Detroit to NYC, when the flight leaving from Dayton flies through Detroit.
A flight from Detroit to Baltimore is significantly less expensive than a flight from Detroit to NYC, Philidelphia or Washington DC. Reason Southwest has direct flights from Baltimore to Detroit. No other airline has direct flights from Detroit to these other cities except from Philidelphia, where interestingly the prices are very nearly identical, suggesting collusion amoung some of the airlines.
I would like to see the Justice Department investigate the airlines for using their hubs as monopolies to drive up the price.
