James Hellwig (aka the Ultimate Warrior) recently passed away during a family vacation at the age of 54. Paul Farhi of The Washington Post noted that "The list of prematurely dead wrestlers of the last generation is so long, stretching to more than five dozen names..." These deaths are often attributed to serious substance abuse (including steroids, pain killers and alcohol). As The Washington Post also notes, World Wrestling Entertainment has made some reforms: it "...banned direct blows to the head, it instituted a drug-testing regimen and it cut back on mandatory performances in an effort to allow its 75 or so performers more time to recuperate." Nevertheless, we call on the Obama Administration to address and investigate the alarming rate of professional wrestling deaths.
