Electoral fraud can occur at any stage in the democratic process, but most commonly it occurs during election campaigns, voter registration or during vote-counting. The two main types of electoral fraud are (1) preventing eligible voters from casting their vote freely (or from voting at all/tearing up registration forms, etc.), and (2) altering the results(voting machine tampering, etc.). There are many ways by which perpetrators may subvert the purposes of democracy, work against the principles of democracy, or be in violation of the principles of democracy. But despite there being a way to prosecute it, electoral fraud has been allowed to persist by either ignoring it, or by stretching what few court cases there are out until they fade into the background and the problem is forgotten.
