The incarceration rate in the United States of America is the highest in the world. Why? Some prisoners are forced to sleep on floors or in improper housing. The food quality gets lower even as prison population and profits rise. We pay $30,000 to $40,000 per year per prisoner. One year of tuition at Stanford University costs less than one year in prison. The estimated total is between $40 billion and $60 billion per year. Special interests motivated by profits work to increase these numbers. A lot of money is being wasted to fund comparatively small profits. Stop treating humans like property. Keywords: waste, exploitation, corruption, embezzlement.
